The material read
Bamboo is a grass, not a timber, and that shows up here every March. Natural cane takes on water through cut ends and split skin, then freezes, and each cycle opens the split wider. Kept off the ground, sealed annually, and clear of roof runoff, it holds up. Treated as install-and-forget, it grays and cracks fast. Engineered board does not move that way.
Two very different products under one name: natural cane panels that screen for a handful of seasons, and engineered bamboo board that performs like composite for twenty years. Massachusetts winters are what separates them.

Cane comes in rolls and panels at fixed heights, so the design works around stock sizes rather than cut-to-fit.
Neither product free-stands. There is always a pressure-treated or steel frame carrying it.
Non-negotiable in our climate. Bamboo sitting in snowmelt can fail in a single season.

Five to ten years for natural cane that gets sealed annually, and fifteen to twenty-five for engineered board. Untreated cane can start splitting within a couple of seasons. The variable is water: freeze-thaw cycling destroys cane, and the engineered product barely absorbs water at all.
Engineered board handles it without special care. Natural cane survives only with help: clearance off the ground, a frame that stops it flexing under snow load, siting away from roof drip, and a sealer each spring. Skip any of those and expect splits by the second winter.
Natural is whole or split cane wired into panels, so it keeps the hollow structure and the nodes. Engineered is bamboo strand compressed and resin-bonded into solid planks, then milled like lumber. Request separate quotes for the selected product and framing.
