Massachusetts winters are what kill automated gates. Slide gates ride either a bottom track or a cantilever rail, and a track fills with ice and packed snow until the operator stalls, so we specify cantilever on plowed sites. Salt spray near the coast pits galvanizing at the welds, so steel frames want powder coat over hot-dip. Buried loop detectors handle frost heave better than surface sensors.

Use a slide gate on any site that gets plowed or slopes at the opening. A swing gate needs a level arc and clear space on both sides, and it fights snow and wind. In New England, choose a cantilever slide over a bottom-track slide, because a track ices up and stalls.
It releases so the gate can be moved by hand. Every operator we install has a manual disconnect, and most sites add a battery backup that keeps the gate cycling for several hours. Solar operators run off their own battery. Make sure someone on site knows where the release is.
Roughly 10 to 15 years, well short of the gate frame itself, which goes 30 years or more. Cycle count matters more than age: a yard opening two hundred times a day wears an operator out faster than a compound opening twice. Lubrication twice a year extends it.
