The material read
The weak point in a New England welded wire fence is never the mesh, it is the post line. Frost pushes shallow-set wood posts up a little more each winter until the run visibly leans, and a braced corner assembly set too shallow will simply pull. Get line posts past four feet and the mesh outlasts two sets of posts.

Welded wire is fused at each intersection and stays rigid and square, which suits panels, small pens, and anywhere appearance matters. Woven wire is knotted, so it flexes under impact and recovers instead of breaking a weld, which is why large stock hitting a fence hard is better held by woven.
Fifteen to thirty years, and the coating decides where you land. Wire galvanized after welding seals the joints and reaches the top of that range even on a wet field edge. Wire galvanized before welding leaves welds bare, and those rust through first, sometimes within eight years.
Goats do well behind two by four inch mesh at four to five feet, tight enough that horns do not get caught the way they do in larger woven squares. Poultry needs half inch hardware cloth at the base, because standard mesh stops chickens leaving but not raccoons entering.
