Weight is the whole story in New England. A composite panel resists the cold-snap impacts that split vinyl, and its mass damps road noise better than any hollow panel. The structure still carries the wind load of a solid 6-foot wall, so footings go 48 inches down and wider on exposed lots. Heat expansion is handled with end gaps cut to the install-day temperature.

Yes, on impact resistance. Composite stays comparatively tough as temperatures drop, while PVC gets brittle and splits from strikes it would shrug off in summer. Cold alone harms neither. Compare the specified boards and framing for a fence beside a plowed driveway or play area.
Better than vinyl, and not as well as a purpose-built acoustic assembly. Sound blocking scales with mass and with the absence of gaps, and composite boards are far heavier than hollow PVC. Expect a noticeable softening of traffic noise rather than silence. If noise is the primary goal, we spec differently.
Not if the gaps are right. Composite boards lengthen as they warm, so each board end needs clearance, typically an eighth to a quarter inch depending on the temperature the day it is installed. A fence built tight on a cold morning is the one that bows in August.
